1/1

“1/1” is an artist book about unified consciousness. Too often we get caught up in dualistic thinking – black or white, good or bad – where two perspectives oppose each other. From this perspective, there is always someone who is “better” or “worse” than me. And someone always loses.

Non-dual consciousness, on the other hand, recognizes that we are all in this existence together. When one person suffers, so do I. The other is no longer considered the other.

“Today’s world requires that we accept the oneness of humanity.”
Dalai Lama

“One over one” or “1/1” is a printing term that means one color printed on one side of the paper. In this artist book I use the visual dualities of black and white – black ink on white paper – to represent dualistic thinking, while the text presents unified consciousness.

The first and last pages of the book are printed intaglio from a copper plate. I see this web/screen/net as the unseen grid that holds us all together.

I hand-wrote the text and scanned it to create a negative for a photopolymer plate to print type-high on letterpress.

Here is the middle of the book, with another intaglio-printed net image. The binding is a double-stitched pamphlet – two pamphlets sewn into a substrate, leaving a 1/2″ tab between the pamphlets.

We are one people. That’s not to say we are all the same. Each of us bears visible distinctions, such as the color of our skin. However, ultimately – when our bodies return to dust – we look the same. When we bleed, our blood is the same color.

The perspective presented in this book comes from a unitive consciousness that transcends the dualities such as black and white that divide us. Even as we remain distinct individuals, our true nature shines brightest when see beyond those visible differences and recognize each another as brother and sister, one in spirit.
