My work explores the tension between loss and gain. For instance, you can’t have sex without losing your virginity. Though the materials I use to make my work vary, the visual metaphor remains largely the same: holes punched into paper and the discs that pop out.

It all started when I created my artist book Literary Essences in 2000. To create the “essences,” I punched holes into the pages of the featured books and inserted the discs into vials. At first I was interested only in gathering the discs. At one point, I recognized the visual and textural beauty of the punched text page, and in an instant they transformed from waste scraps to treasures.
